What should be in my application?

If you would like to be considered for the MS degree program(s)Ìýand are not a currently enrolledÌýundergraduate or graduate studentÌýat CU, you must submit the following application items:

An application must be completed through the graduate school admissions website.

Note: The MS Thesis program does not offer direct entry. Students interested in the MS Thesis program should apply to the MS Professional program. If admitted, students can formally switch to the thesis program upon securing a thesis advisor. Please ensure to view the "Additional Information" tab below for ways to notate that you are intending to pursue the MS Thesis degree program.Ìý

Also, the choice of focus area is not binding and is intended primarily to assist with application review and balancing student numbers in different areas.

An application fee of $60 for domestic applicants and $80 for international applicants must be paid at the time of application.Ìý

The Paul M. Rady Department of Mechanical Engineering understands that this application fee presents a challenge for some applicants. Our community is committed to providing educational opportunities for a diverse range of applicants and strives to waive application fees whenever possible.Ìý

  2. ​Members of the U.S. military will receive an automatic application fee waiver from the graduate school upon submission of the application.

Fee waivers are also available directly from the department for MS and PhD Candidates who are not eligible for the Graduate School fee waiver (see above for requirements for the Graduate School fee waiver);ÌýandÌýare a U.S. citizen,ÌýU.S. permanent resident, or DACA recipient;Ìýand meet any one of the following:
    1. The application fee is a financial hardship.
    2. You are a first-generation college student.
    3. You are/wereÌýinvolved in any organization aimed at increasing access to higher education and/or improving the higher education experience for students from underrepresented backgrounds. Some examples of organizations that meet this requirement include:

Please provide aÌýcomplete resume or curriculum vitae (CV)Ìýdetailing prior education, work and research experience, as well as honors, awards, publications, conference presentations and community engagement and outreach activities.

There is no minimum or maximum page/word length for the resume/CV but we usually recommend it being one to two pages.Ìý

Please provide a personal statement that describes your academic interests, prior professional experience and achievements, professional goals, and how the É«½ä³ÉÈËÖ±²¥ mechanical engineering MS degree will enable you to meet those goals. You may also wish to share additional information that you want the admissions committee to be aware of. A strong personal statement tells a story and contextualizes information on your resume/CV instead of repeating it.

To be considered for departmental scholarships, you can also describe how your personal and professional experiences have helped shape your academic journey, interest in pursuing a graduate degree in Mechanical Engineering, and vision for the future. You may reflect on your research topic, professional service, community engagement, personal perspectives, outreach activities, and more. We especially encourage this if any of the following apply to you:

  • Returning to higher education after a 5+ year hiatus
  • Substantial professional experience outside of STEM fields (5+ years)
  • Holding an undergraduate degree in a non-STEM discipline
  • Transferring from a junior/community college/2-year institution to complete your undergraduate degree at a four-year accredited institution
  • First-generation graduate student (no parent/guardian completed education beyond a college degree)Ìý

Please provide unofficial transcriptsÌýfrom coursework at all post-secondary institutions (including community college courses, courses taken for college credit during high school and study abroad coursework, even if this coursework shows as transfer credit on another transcript). If you are offered admission and choose to accept our admission offer, you will then beÌýrequired to provide official transcripts for all schools attendedÌýprior to the beginning of their first semester.

You will also be asked to upload a research statement addressing the following prompt:Ìý

Since you have noted an interest in pursuing and/or declaring the MS thesis/traditional track, please upload a research statement addressing the following prompt: In two pages or less, please detail any past research experience, your future research interests, and how they relate to the research happening in the É«½ä³ÉÈËÖ±²¥ mechanical engineering department. Please submit this research statement and be sure to note ME faculty in the ME department with whom you would like to work with in the question below, so your information can be shared with ME faculty that may be recruiting MS Thesis students for your applied MS start term.Ìý

Finally, please view the Mechanical EngineeringÌýFaculty listing website, filter by your interested focus area, and name at the faculty member(s) within the Mechanical Engineering department that you are interested in serving as your thesis advisor (in order of preference) in the text box provided.Ìý

If you are an international student, you submit unofficial or official TOEFL,ÌýIELTS, or DuolingoÌýscores. If you are offered admission and wish to join our graduate program, you will beÌýrequired to provide official language scores in order to be issued an I-20 and apply for a visa.
