Find an Advisor
Having a faculty or staff advisor can be highly beneficial for student organizations. Advisors offer support and guidance, can help with navigate campus processes and can serve as continuity during times of leadership transition. Not sure how an advisor could benefit your organization? Learn more here.
- Consider your organization's mission and:
- Find a faculty/staff member who has similar interests.
- Find a faculty/staff member who works within an academic department that matches.
- Find a faculty/staff member that your organization feels would be a good advisor, regardless of their background.
- After making a list of potential advisors, prioritize them. Then approach each person about the possibility of becoming an advisor for your group.
- If you take classes or interact with the staff member regularly, consider an in-person approach.
- If you do not know them, consider sending a formal email to their @colorado.edu address.
- When you are asking someone to be an advisor for your student organization, be sure to mention the following:
- Explain what your organization does, its goals, etc., so they have a better idea of what they are getting themselves into.
- Tell them the special qualities they have to be a good advisor.
- Let them know the time commitment and responsibilities they will have by becoming an advisor for your organization.
- If you still need options, reach out to the Center for Student Involvement (studentorganizations@colorado.edu) to see if we have recommendations.
- We keep a list of any faculty/staff who have expressed interest in being an advisor, but there is no guarantee that we will have options.
