The CU Research Computing (CURC) group, along with key colleagues across CU from the Department of Computer Science and Quantum Innovations Hub, are preparing a proposal for the NSF Advanced Computing Systems & Services (ACSS) program to build a high-performance computing (HPC) system designed to support research in quantum science and engineering.

Their goal is to co-design the system based on the real needs of the research community. If awarded, this resource would support quantum computing simulations, compilation workflows, quantum sensing applications, materials modeling and more.

The group is seeking researchers—who would receive priority access to the resources available—to partner with them on the proposal, with a potential to engage students as part of the project.

If you would like to be a part of this effort, please express your interest by May 20 with the following information:

What types of research in your group would benefit from such an HPC resource?
What software or simulation tools do you use that require high-performance computing or are currently bottlenecked?
Are you currently using any HPC resources (e.g., Alpine at ɫ��ֱ��, Amazon Web Services, etc.)? If so, please let us know what you're using and for what purpose.
Do you have examples of relevant publications or ongoing work?
Are there any specific hardware or software requirements (e.g., GPU needs, memory, specialized toolchains)?

Venture Partners at ɫ��ֱ�� bridged a historic investment gap to move a deep tech spinoff a step closer to the marketplace by awarding $100,000 in pre-seed funding to PrecisionTerra, founded by CEO Maithreyi Gopalakrishnan. Gopalakrishnan went on to win $144,000 in additional funding for the company in the 2025 New Venture Challenge.

As part of the university’s overall compensation strategy, two new groups are taking on improving the salaries of tenured and tenure-track faculty and ensuring unit-level approaches to salaries for faculty are in line with state law and previous university recommendations.

The chancellor has appointed the first of the two groups, the Faculty Salary Task Force, which will focus on the following actions and assessments to improve salaries:

Market and cost of living comparison.
Promotion and tenure raises.
Retention offer processes.
Faculty actions funding in the budget model.
Total compensation vs. salary compensation.
Teaching loads.
College/department planning tools.
Compensation levers.
The work of the Faculty Salary Procedures Working Group.

The Faculty Salary Task Force is co-chaired by Ann Schmiesing, interim vice chancellor for strategic initiatives, and Shelly Miller, outgoing ɫ��ֱ�� Faculty Assembly chair and professor of mechanical engineering in the College of Engineering and Applied Science.

Schmiesing announced at the final chairs and directors meeting on Friday, May 2, that the task force will make recommendations regarding compensation enhancement options and strategies, with an initial focus on teaching professors and tenure-track/tenured faculty.

Schmiesing said the committee’s work is not meant to recreate or duplicate existing efforts, but to enable alignment and coordination of those efforts within a larger umbrella. Its recommendations will align with ɫ��ֱ��’s compensation philosophy and with the work of the Faculty Salary Procedures Working Group.

Schmiesing said the task force has representation from ɫ��ֱ��’s colleges and schools and teaching professor and tenure-track/tenured ranks, as well as representation from Human Resources, Faculty Affairs and the Provost’s Office staff “who have contributed to compensation strategy work.”

Schmiesing said the task force will deliver its report to the chancellor in October.

Simultaneous and complementary to the work of the task force, Fernando Rosario-Ortiz, interim vice chancellor for academic resource management (also a member of the Faculty Salary Task Force), is overseeing additional faculty compensation initiatives. The Provost’s Office has hired a group of faculty fellows whose work is focused on advancing recommendations from the Faculty Salary Procedures Working group. The fellows are Derek Briggs (Education), Steven Vanderheiden (Political Science), and Jerry Jacka (Anthropology).

Rosario-Ortiz said the main tasks for this work will be to:

Update the campus salary equity grievance policy.
Collaborate with schools and colleges to review and align unit governance documents with campus policies.
- Conduct (and support) analysis of compensation within units.
- Develop best practices and recommend improvements to unit level merit procedures across ɫ��ֱ��, drawing on the Faculty Salary Procedures Working Group report.
- Provide support and resources, including training sessions for academic leaders on implementing unit level procedures.
- Promote transparency regarding merit processes and salaries.

Schmiesing said the combined efforts will complement other actions directed toward staff, graduate students and undergraduate student employees.

“A good example of these actions is the approval by Chancellor Schwartz of the student health insurance plan, which will now have an option for family coverage—something our graduate students have been asking for,” Schmiesing said.

In collaboration with campuswide colleagues, Strategic Relations and Communications has launched a value-of-research marketing campaign and relaunched the ɫ��ֱ�� research webpage. Both efforts integrate with communication and outreach efforts already underway.

This integrated marketing campaign focuses on how the university's research and creative work directly impacts and improves the daily lives of people and communities in Colorado and beyond.

The effort highlights the tangible benefits of ɫ��ֱ�� research, focusing on sustainability, health, space/aerospace and quantum science, and showcases how these advancements enhance the economy, culture, health and quality of people's everyday lives—as well as what's at stake without them.

Interdisciplinary work is highlighted within the themes of social science, business, law, education, arts and humanities and other areas.

Prepare for Fall Welcome, move-in 2025

Fall Welcome will take place Aug. 16–Sept. 6. Students will learn more about campus resources and support services, while making valuable connections with fellow Buffs, faculty and staff.

Parent and family engagement opportunities will also take place during this time. These opportunities will help welcome them to our CU community and share resources and services to help with their student’s transition to ɫ��ֱ��.
