ɫ��ֱ��’s recreation centers are more than just fitness spaces—they’re places to find community, try new activities and make the most of your college experience.

Both the Main Student Recreation Center and the Williams Village Recreation Center are open to full fee-paying students and feature a range of exercise equipment including weights, cardio machines and functional fitness areas. Learn more about what The Rec has to offer.

Join fitness classes and training programs

Fitness and Wellness programs at The Rec offer various ways to stay motivated, find workout buddies and reach your fitness goals. Explore these options as you begin your first semester:

Group fitness classes: Access over 65 group fitness classes each week with a Be Fit Pass. From Pilates and cycling to strength training and F45, there’s something for everyone. Be sure to check out new classes this fall, like Body Pump by Les Mills!

Instructional programs: Take advantage of small group instructional classes for activities like swimming, boxing, CrossFit, dance, martial arts and ice skating.

Personal training: Reach your fitness goals with certified personal trainers, either with one-on-one or pair sessions

Discover new activities and find community

Your time at ɫ��ֱ�� is the perfect opportunity to step out of your comfort zone and try something new. The Rec creates spaces to explore, connect and grow:

Inclusive Rec events: Open to all Buffs, these free events allow you to make new connections while trying different things like hiking, ice skating, adaptive training sessions and more.

Free Friday Power Hour: If you purchase a Be Fit Pass but your friend doesn’t, invite them to Free Friday Power Hour! Curious about group fitness classes but not ready to commit to a Be Fit Pass? Buffs can join a free class every Friday during the semester.

Work at The Rec: Looking for a campus job? The Rec Center offers opportunities for students to gain valuable leadership skills, work experience and friendships.

Get involved through team sports

Team sports are a fun and engaging way to stay active while forming friendships and building a sense of community. Here are two ways to get involved:

Intramural (IM) Sports

Join one of ɫ��ֱ��’s Intramural Sports leagues, open to all skill levels. Buy a Sports Pass for unlimited access to IM Sports for $25 per semester or $45 per year. Whether you’re playing on a team or joining as a free agent, it’s all about having fun and meeting new friends.

Sport Clubs

Take your athletic interests to the next level by competing against other colleges and universities through Sport Clubs. ɫ��ֱ�� offers 30 men’s, women’s and co-ed teams. Informational meetings take place in late August and early September, and some teams may hold tryouts.

Explore Colorado with Outdoor Pursuits

Living in ɫ��ֱ�� means you have access to stunning outdoor spaces, and Outdoor Pursuits at ɫ��ֱ�� can help you make the most of it. Whether you’re new to outdoor activities or an experienced adventurer, there’s something for everyone:

Trips and courses: Outdoor Pursuits offers trips and courses for activities like hiking, backpacking and climbing. These experiences are a fantastic way to connect with nature and fellow adventurers.

Wilderness workshops: Join fellow Buffs and learn essential skills like backcountry cooking, animal tracking, plant identification and survival techniques.

Equipment rentals: Planning your own adventure? Stop by the Outdoor Equipment Rental Center to rent camping, climbing, water sports and winter equipment. Rentals are available to all Buff OneCard holders.

New Student & Family Programs

Many New Buffs are excited to start their journey at ɫ��ֱ�� and may be wondering what college life may be like. Fortunately, upperclassmen are more than willing to share their experiences!

Katie, Sofia, Connor and Prarthana are journey leaders in New Student & Family Programs. Review their tips and advice for students who are arriving on campus this fall.

Q. What is a favorite memory you have from your orientation or first Fall Welcome?

Sofia: I loved walking around and finding lawn games or people sitting outside. My roommate and I joined a group of people out on Baker field and played ultimate frisbee with them for a couple hours. They ended up being our best friends all of first year which was awesome!

Connor: The block parties and CU Kickoff were fantastic, couldn’t recommend them more!! High energy, easily able to make friends, cool things to do and captures the spirit of CU.

Prarthana: My favorite memory from Fall Welcome is the WelcomeFest. I met so many people that night, including some of my (now) closest friends. After the event, we all went back to one of our dorms and didn't leave until 3 a.m.

Q. Are there any social events or activities that you found particularly helpful for making friends?

Katie: I met a lot of people through the Greek rush process. Regardless of the outcome, it is a great way to meet people. I also found attending random events and just putting myself out there helped.

Sofia: Somewhat random, but I think that activities at The Rec are always a great way to meet people. Events like Flick 'n Float or paddleboard yoga are always really fun, and you get to hang out with new people doing a silly activity! I also met really cool people at the climbing gym in The Rec.

Prarthana: I really loved the Neighborhood Block Parties! A lot of people that I ran into that night lived in the same area as me, so I was able to create connections with people I knew I would see again afterward.

Q. What advice do you have for approaching new people and starting conversations?

Katie: Start by learning the basics—hometown, major, interests—and then once you find something you have in common or find interesting talk about that, ask questions and then initiate getting contact info or hanging out with them. Everyone is trying to find friends, so everybody is open to conversations like that.

Sofia: Remember that they are also just trying to get to know people. If anything, they will probably be grateful if you start the conversation.

Connor: Find a commonality (whether you like the same food, musician, interest, major or more).

Prarthana: My advice for approaching new people is to show interest in talking to them! Be curious and want to get to know who they are. I think it is also very important to be authentic!

Q. What advice do you have for someone who is shy or introverted when it comes to making friends?

Katie: Challenge yourself to do one thing that puts you outside of your comfort zone each day. That could be going to the dining center alone, talking to someone new or giving a compliment. By taking tiny steps, you will be putting yourself out there for connections to be made.

Sofia: My life hack is finding something to compliment something on. Whether it be their hair or outfit or shoes, I go up and say "Hey, I love your ____" and that helps me start talking when I'm nervous. I also usually just start by asking for their name. The conversation usually flows after that on its own. I will say just go for it—the more you do it the more comfortable you'll be with talking to new people!

Connor: Have patience—it takes time to develop new relationships.

Q. What are some ways to balance extracurricular activities with academic responsibilities?

Katie: Academics always come first, so in your first year try not to take too many hours (12-15) so you have time to develop connections and adjust to college life.

Sofia: I think it is important to separate school and fun. It can be hard, especially in your first year, when everything is in the same area. I would stay away from my residence hall until I finished everything on my to-do list. That way I was able to have my environments for studying and then for activities. I also would use my extracurriculars as an incentive to finish my work.

Connor: Set a timed schedule on what hours to study, what extracurricular activities you have, classes, labs, recitations, so you can have a balance between school and a social life.

Prarthana: Some ways to balance extracurricular activities with academic responsibilities is staying organized. I use an app called Notion to manage my assignments and weekly schedule. This helps me make sure that I stay on track in terms of all my assignments! I also have a timetable made for the week, which helps me visualize when I have classes and extracurricular activities to attend.

Q. What do you wish you had known in your first year of college?

Katie: I wish I had known that everything would turn out okay. Transitions are a stressful time, and new things can be scary, but putting yourself out there and doing something new is good for you.

Connor: There are more resources and fun things to do than you think you know. Keep on a look out for fun events!

Prarthana: In my first year of college, I wish I had known how important it is to be authentic from the start. Not being entirely authentic has resulted in me getting involved with people I don't mesh well with. If I had been authentic from the start, I would have found my people sooner.

Q. What other advice do you have for New Buffs?

Katie: Be open to new experiences, new people and being uncomfortable. Be aware of the resources on campus you are paying for, explore The Rec and just have fun. It flies by and it is so, so fun.

Sofia: Remember that you will be here for a while. You don't have to get everything done in your first year! It's okay to take the first few months slowly to get your feet on the ground. All those activities and opportunities that seem interesting to you will still be here by the end of the semester. Take care of yourself!

Connor: Look for a study space that best suits your needs. It doesn’t always have to be at a library. It can be at a coffee shop, at lunch or a small desk tucked away. Make a list of these to help with homework and test taking.

Prarthana: Get excited! The first year comes with both ups and downs but know that there are so many others who are in the same boat as you.

Transfer peer mentors can offer guidance and connect you to campus resources—email transferbuffs@colorado.edu to schedule a meeting.

3. Get involved on campus

Join student organizations through BuffConnect or start your own. Explore volunteer opportunities on CUServes. Find an on-campus job or join community programs through the Center for Cultural Connections & Community, the Sustainable Buffs Community and Rec Center.

Move-in will be here before you know it! If you’re moving into one of the residence halls soon, here are some tips for a positive experience.

1. Pack strategically

To help you maximize your space and reduce waste, review what to bring to campus and what items to leave at home. Before making purchases, consider spending several days in your room to get a feel for what else you need.

Residence halls will have carts to help you bring items to your room. Be aware that some residence halls do not have elevators—volunteers may be around for help with moving belongings.

2. Stay hydrated and wear comfortable shoes

Colorado weather in August tends to be hot, sunny and dry. Be prepared for your move-in day with sunscreen and a reusable water bottle to stay hydrated. And remember to take breaks throughout the day, especially if you are from out of state and getting used to ɫ��ֱ��’s elevation.

Between bringing items to your room and exploring campus, you may move around and walk a lot during the day. Consider wearing comfortable and closed-toed shoes during move-in.

3. Download the ɫ��ֱ�� Life app

Download the app from the Apple App Store or Google Play to have everything you need in one place. Get details on student events, review the Campus Map, find resources and more all through the ɫ��ֱ�� Life app.

4. Introduce yourself to others

During your move-in day and first week on campus, don't be afraid to introduce yourself to others. This is the time of year when everyone is getting to know each other, so make the first move and say hello!

Try to get to know others in your residence hall and connect with fellow Buffs at Fall Welcome events. If you have a great conversation with someone, ask them to get dinner later or meet for coffee sometime soon.

5. Explore campus

After you’ve moved in, explore campus during your free time around Fall Welcome events.

Use the Campus Map to find where your classes are and nearby study spots.
Check out the different dining centers, grab-n-gos, markets and cafes to find your favorite place to eat. With 15 campus dining locations, there are many convenient options for finding breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks.
Visit the Rec Center, the University Memorial Center (UMC) and the Center for Community (C4C) to find ways to get involved on campus.

University Memorial Center

Known as the campus “living room,” thousands of people visit the University Memorial Center (UMC) every day to eat, enjoy free activities and entertainment, study or just hang out. Here are some things to know about the UMC.

1. There are lots of dining options

From the Alferd Packer Restaurant & Grill to Starbucks, Infinitus Pie, Panda Express and Subway, the UMC has dining options for every taste.

Dining options will be limited in spring 2026 while the UMC undergoes several construction projects. Learn more about closures and alternative places to get food.

2. You can find your perfect study spot

Whether you need to print a paper or you like a table to spread out on, the UMC has excellent places to study. Be sure to check out the fifth-floor rooftop patio for a study space with a great view!

One great option for studying is the Student Engagement & Collaboration Area (SECA). Here you can find meeting rooms and lounge areas to work on group projects or be around others who are also working. And if you’re a student who commutes or lives off campus, check out the Commuter Lounge in UMC 102.

3. You have access to a premier gaming lounge on campus

ɫ��ֱ�� has its own full-scale gaming space! Located on the first floor of the UMC, the Alienware Buffalo Esports and Gaming Lounge is outfitted with 17 Alienware gaming desktop stations, three Alienware gaming laptops, a varsity esports training area, a broadcast studio, console games and a tabletop game space. The gaming lounge is open to all ɫ��ֱ�� students, staff and faculty and community members.

4. It has bowling, billiards and more

The Connection on the first floor of the UMC is a place to kick back, relax, have fun and meet new people. The space offers fun recreation options and amenities such as bowling, billiards, ping pong, video games and board games in a welcoming and open environment.

5. The UMC is home to student resources

Located at the base of the Rocky Mountains, ɫ��ֱ�� is a unique city with plenty to do. Whether you’re in town this summer for the first time or you’ve visited ɫ��ֱ�� before, here are some tips to help you get familiar with the area and prepare for fall semester.

Food and fun

ɫ��ֱ�� is a vibrant city with lots to see and do near campus.

The Hill: University Hill, or “The Hill,” is a popular spot for students with plenty of shops and places to eat.

Pearl Street: Pearl Street is right in the center of ɫ��ֱ�� and offers great options for food, entertainment and shopping.

Restaurants: ɫ��ֱ�� is famous for its awesome food! If you’re looking for affordable options, check out Downtown ɫ��ֱ��’s Bites on a Budget list.

Elevation and all seasons

ɫ��ֱ�� has a mild and dry climate and experiences all four seasons throughout the year (sometimes even in the same day). With these elements, make sure you have sunscreen, sunglasses and a reusable water bottle.

While ɫ��ֱ�� is often sunny, it is not always warm. During the winter months, ɫ��ֱ�� can experience blizzards that leave inches of snow on the ground and temperatures below freezing. Remember to pack plenty of warm clothes, winter boots, a winter coat, gloves, a hat and scarf.

It may take some time for you to acclimate to ɫ��ֱ��’s elevation and dry climate, and it’s extremely important to stay hydrated. After moving to ɫ��ֱ��, students are encouraged to gradually increase activity level to avoid altitude sickness. Learn more about preventing altitude sickness and the signs of dehydration before move-in.

Getting around the city

ɫ��ֱ�� is one of the most bike-friendly and pedestrian-friendly cities in the country. The ɫ��ֱ�� Creek Path runs throughout the city, allowing for easy biking or walking without the stress of traffic.

If you plan to bring your bike to campus in the fall, review these tips from the CU Police Department about preventing bike theft. You're also able to rent a bike through the Environmental Center each semester or sign up for BCycle.

Outdoor recreation

Between hiking, climbing, camping, backpacking and more, there are many options to explore Colorado's great outdoors. If you're visiting ɫ��ֱ�� this summer, review these essential tips for hiking in Colorado.

If you're interested in visiting state and national parks, check out the Rec Center’s Outdoor Pursuits. Through Outdoor Pursuits, you can rent gear, take trips with fellow Buffs and learn new skills.

ɫ��ֱ�� is also close to many downhill ski areas. The CU Ski Bus provides an affordable, convenient way to get to the I-70 resorts and back.

Make the first move

When it comes to making friends, one strategy to try this semester is to commit to making the first move. Try to be the first one to introduce yourself when you meet someone new over the next few weeks. Whether you’re meeting people in your residence hall or at Fall Welcome events, being the one to break the ice can help pave the way for fun conversations and new friendships.

Find Buffs with similar interests or hobbies

Finding your community can help you feel more comfortable at a large university like ɫ��ֱ��. Between student organizations, classes, or programs and events that are specific to different groups and interests, there are many ways to connect with Buffs around things you have in common.

Make time to socialize: While focusing on academics is important, you should also take breaks to attend events and spend time with others.

Keep trying: It can take time to find friends that you connect with more deeply. It’s OK if you have friends that you only see in class or when you visit the Rec Center at first. These interactions can still be a highlight in your day and might become closer friendships over time.

Starting in fall 2025, Recognized Student Organizations (RSOs) at ɫ��ֱ�� will be required to have a faculty or staff member serve as an advisor. This new guideline is intended enhance the experience of student organizations and ensure effective operations.

Benefits of advisor involvement

Advisors bring a wealth of knowledge and expertise, acting as a sounding board and providing invaluable support to student groups. Their involvement fosters a more engaging experience for students and strengthens the connection between RSOs and our campus community. Here are a few more benefits of advisor involvement in RSOs:

Expertise: Whether the organization is focused on academic, cultural or social endeavors, an advisor’s insight can guide and enhance its activities.
Consistency: Student membership in RSOs can change frequently, but advisors offer a stabilizing presence. Their continuous involvement ensures that the organization's goals and traditions remain intact, providing continuity from one academic year to the next.
Enhanced support: With an advisor, RSOs have access to personalized support, which can significantly impact the group’s success. Advisors help navigate challenges, celebrate achievements and mentor student leaders, fostering a nurturing environment for growth.

Advisor eligibility

Advisors can be current ɫ��ֱ�� faculty or staff members, as well as graduate students who serve as a ɫ��ֱ�� GA/TA/RA/GPTI. Graduate-led organizations must have a faculty or staff member as their advisor.

RSOs will provide the name and email address of their advisor during the annual registration process. Details about the new advisor requirements will be available in June with the opening of RSO registration. RSOs will need an advisor by December 19, 2025 to remain in good standing.

Find support

The Center for Student Involvement will continue to offer support to RSOs through their liaisons, including assistance with funding requests, to ensure that student organizations have the resources they need to thrive.

Starting June 1, 2025, the Division of Student Affairs will now be called the Division of Student Life. This new name better reflects everything the division offers to students during their time at ɫ��ֱ��.

The Division of Student Life

"Student Life” is a more accurate representation of the services, resources and support available to students at ɫ��ֱ��.

Changing the name to Student Life also matches the best practices at many higher education institutions that have moved away from the term “student affairs.” It is a more relatable term for students and showcases the support provided to them in all aspects of their academic journey.

"This name change to the Division of Student Life marks a significant step in our ongoing efforts to enrich the student experience at ɫ��ֱ��," said Dr. D’Andra Mull, vice chancellor for the division. "We are dedicated to providing transformational experiences and resources that truly resonate with our students' needs and aspirations. This rebranding is part of our broader mission to create an environment where every Buff can thrive academically, socially and personally."

Department name changes

Some departments within the Division of Student Life will also be changing their names to better align with best practices and be more reflective of what they offer.

The following name changes are effective starting June 1, 2025:

Campus Dining Services will become Campus Dining & Hospitality
The Center for Inclusion and Social Change will now be Center for Cultural Connections and Community (The Center)
Off-Campus Housing & Neighborhood Relations will be Off-Campus Life
Student Affairs Planning, Assessment and Data Analytics will become Student Life Center for Assessment, Insight and Research (AIR)
Student Affairs Human Resources will be Student Life Employee Experience
Student Affairs Information Technology will now be Student Life Technology Solutions
Student Support and Case Management will become Student Outreach, Advocacy and Support

"As we transition to the Division of Student Life, it's essential that our department names also reflect the dynamic and supportive environment we strive to create," said Dr. Mull.

"These new names represent our commitment to continuously enhance the services and resources we provide to our students, and more accurately convey the breadth of support and opportunities available to every Buff. We are excited about these changes and look forward to further amplifying the student experience at ɫ��ֱ��."

As our campus community prepares for a new academic year, the Division of Student Life will continue to provide excellent support and resources, fostering a holistic and empowering environment for all students.

Starting June 1, ɫ��ֱ��’s Division of Student Affairs will be renamed Division of Student Life to better reflect its comprehensive support for students. Several departments within the division will also undergo name changes to more accurately represent their support services and align with best practices.
